Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Oriflamme Canyon is a deep and narrow canyon located in San Diego County, California. It starts high up in the Laguna Mountains and winds its way northwest, then northeast. This canyon eventually meets Rodriguez Canyon at the edge of Mason Valley. This is also where the Vallecito Wash begins its journey.

History of Oriflamme Canyon

Oriflamme Canyon has a long and interesting history. For many years, it was an important pathway for Native American groups. They used this route to travel between the mountains and the desert. It connected people living near the coast of what is now San Diego County, California with those living near the Colorado River.

Later, the canyon became a popular route for other travelers. Spanish, Mexican, and American explorers and settlers all used this path. Even U. S. Army messengers, called couriers, traveled through the canyon.

The San Antonio-San Diego Mail Line

A famous mail service called the San Antonio–San Diego Mail Line also used Oriflamme Canyon. This mail line helped deliver letters and goods across the country. Passengers on this line would ride mules through the canyon. This was a challenging but important part of their journey.

Travelers would ride mules between places like Carrizo Creek Station and Lassitor's Ranch. This route was a shortcut to San Diego. It allowed passengers to cross the mountains on mules or horses, making their trip faster.
