Oriol de Bolòs i Capdevila (born March 16, 1924, in Olot; died March 22, 2007, in Barcelona) was an important Spanish botanist. Botanists study plants. He was also a pteridologist, meaning he specialized in ferns. He was also a phytosociologist, which means he studied how different plant groups live together.
Oriol de Bolòs was an expert on the plants found in Catalonia and Spain. He also knew a lot about plants in the Mediterranean areas, the North Atlantic islands (like Macaronesia), and even Brazil.
Early Life and Career
Oriol de Bolòs came from a family of pharmacists and botanists. This probably helped him develop his love for plants early on! He earned his doctorate degree in biological sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid.
In 1953, he became a professor at the University of Barcelona. From 1965 to 1984, he was the director of the Botanical Institute of Barcelona. This is a big job where he led research and studies about plants. He also joined the Institute of Catalan Studies in 1964 and even chaired its Biological Sciences section for a few years.
His Important Work
Oriol de Bolòs was greatly influenced by other famous botanists. One was Pius Font i Quer, and another was Josias Braun-Blanquet, who started the study of phytosociology. Bolòs even worked with Braun-Blanquet to publish a book in 1958 about plant groups in the Ebro basin.
His most famous work is the Flora dels Països Catalans (Flora of Catalonia, Valencia, and the Balearic Islands). This huge project, published between 1984 and 2001, aimed to record all the known plants in these regions. He worked on this with Josep Vigo Bonada. Oriol de Bolòs wrote or helped write over 200 books and articles during his career.
He was very careful about how plants were named. This is called botanical nomenclature. He also cared deeply about protecting the environment. He worked hard to make sure nature would be safe for future generations.
Awards and Recognition
Oriol de Bolòs received many honors for his work. He was a member of important groups like the Catalan Institute of Natural History. He was also part of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona.
The Government of Catalonia gave him special awards. These included the Narcís Monturiol medal for his contributions to science and technology. He also received the Creu de Sant Jordi, which is the highest honor given by the Catalan government.
