Orpheus Island National Park is a special protected area in North Queensland, Australia. It is located on Orpheus Island, which is also known by its Aboriginal name, Goolboddi Island. This island is part of the Palm Islands group. It sits about 1,189 kilometers (739 miles) northwest of Brisbane.
The national park also includes a small island called Albino Rock. This rock is about 2.6 kilometers (1.6 miles) east of Great Palm Island. Orpheus Island itself is a continental island, meaning it was once connected to the mainland.
Island History and Naming
Before Europeans arrived, Aboriginal people lived on Orpheus Island. These were likely the Nyawigi people. The island's name, "Orpheus," was given in 1887 by Lieutenant G. E. Richards. He named it after HMS Orpheus, a ship from the Royal Navy that was wrecked near New Zealand in 1863.
In 1960, Orpheus Island was officially made a national park. This helps protect its unique natural environment.
Research and Education
Orpheus Island is home to a research station run by James Cook University. Scientists here study the marine life and ecosystems of the area. This includes the amazing Great Barrier Reef.
Since 2000, St Michael's Grammar School from St Kilda, Victoria has visited the island every June. Students take part in a special marine biology project. This gives them a chance to learn about ocean life firsthand.
Visiting Orpheus Island
The island also has a luxury resort called the Orpheus Island Great Barrier Reef Luxury Resort. Visitors can stay here to enjoy the beautiful scenery and marine environment.
Great Palm Island is the closest place with government facilities.
