The Orrin and Roxanne Fairman Kinyon House is a special old home located at 7675 N. Ridge Road in Canton, Michigan. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the year 2000. This means it's an important building with a lot of history!

A Look at the Past

The Kinyon family were some of the very first people to settle in Canton Township. Elisha Kinyon and his wife Dilla bought land here in 1831.

Their son, Orrin Kinyon, bought 120 acres of land from his father in 1834. The next year, in 1835, Orrin married Roxanne Fairman. Orrin and Roxanne built this house in 1850. They had eight sons between 1836 and 1856.

Orrin Kinyon was very involved in his community. He helped run the local government from 1835 to 1865. He served as the Highway Commissioner, which meant he helped build and maintain roads. He was also a School Inspector, making sure schools were running well. Orrin even worked as a Justice of the Peace, helping to solve small legal problems. He also served as a constable (a type of police officer) and a Poor Director, helping people in need.

What the House Looks Like

The Orrin and Roxanne Fairman Kinyon House is built in the Greek Revival style. This style was popular in the 1800s and often looks like ancient Greek temples.

The house is made with a strong "post and beam" structure, which uses large wooden posts and beams to hold it up. The outside is covered with wood siding, and it sits on a sturdy stone foundation.

Originally, a room at the back of the house was used as a "summer kitchen." This was a separate kitchen used in hot weather to keep the main house cool. Later, this room became a regular part of the house. Even though the property is smaller now, you can still find old outbuildings and what's left of an orchard (a place where fruit trees grow) on the land.
