Osama Rashid's Football Journey
Starting in Youth Football
Osama Rashid was born in Kirkuk, Iraq. In 1999, he joined the youth team of Feyenoord, a famous Dutch football club. He had previously played for a smaller club called ZOB. Osama spent over ten years learning and growing at Feyenoord's youth academy.
He was part of a very talented group of young players. Many of them, like Stefan de Vrij and Jordy Clasie, became successful professional footballers. Osama had an injury during the 2009 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. He believes this injury stopped him from joining Feyenoord's main team. When he turned 18, Feyenoord did not offer him a professional contract, so he left the club.
Playing for Den Bosch
After leaving Feyenoord, Rashid signed with FC Den Bosch. He played for them during the 2011–12 season in the Eerste Divisie. This is the second-highest professional football league in the Netherlands. He played 12 games and scored two goals. Den Bosch finished sixth in the league that year.
In 2012, Osama had a chance to join SV Werder Bremen, a big club in Germany. He was offered a contract but decided not to take it. He wanted to finish his studies first. Later, he also mentioned that the clubs could not agree on the transfer.
Moving to Smaller Clubs
To get more playing time, Rashid joined Excelsior Maassluis for the 2012–13 season. This team played in the third division of Dutch football. He played 20 games and scored five goals.
In 2013, Rashid moved to Alphense Boys, a team in the fifth division. He played 34 matches there and scored 15 goals. After the 2014–15 season, he left the Netherlands to play in Portugal.
Playing in Portugal and Bulgaria
Osama signed with S.C. Farense in Portugal in 2015. This team played in the LigaPro, which is the second-highest league in Portugal. He played his first game on August 8, 2015. He scored his first goal in his seventh match. Rashid played regularly for Farense, appearing in 41 league games and scoring 6 goals.
Later, he received an offer from Bulgaria. This gave him the chance to play in a country's top football league for the first time. He joined Lokomotiv Plovdiv in Bulgaria. He played his first game as a substitute. However, Osama quickly left Bulgaria because he found it hard to settle in. He then returned to Portugal to join C.D. Santa Clara.
Success with Santa Clara
Santa Clara announced that Osama Rashid had joined their team on January 24, 2017. They were also in the LigaPro. He played his first game for Santa Clara in February. He scored his first goal a few days later. The team finished 10th that season.
The next season, Rashid started strong. He scored in his first games in both the cup and the league. He scored three more goals in the next three league games. This meant he scored in each of the first four league matches. He also made his first assist in September. In January, Osama got injured and it took him almost three months to recover. When he returned, he helped Santa Clara get promoted to the Primeira Liga, Portugal's top league.
In his first season in the Primeira Liga, Osama scored three goals and assisted three others in his first six games. He played in many different midfield positions. He missed four games because he was playing for the Iraq national team in the 2019 Asian Cup. In February, he injured his knee during a game and missed five matches. He finished the season with 25 games, 7 goals, and 6 assists. Santa Clara finished 10th.
Later Club Moves
On January 23, 2021, Rashid signed with Gaziantep, a club in Turkey. Santa Clara said they let him leave because he wanted to join an "attractive project" with good sports and financial opportunities. They called him a "leading figure" and a "living legend" of their club. Osama only stayed with Gaziantep for half a season. The club's performance dropped during his time there.
On June 8, 2021, Rashid signed with Khor Fakkan in the United Arab Emirates. He later joined Vizela in Portugal in 2022, and then Erbil SC in 2024.
Playing for His Country
Netherlands Youth Teams
Osama moved to the Netherlands when he was a child. This meant he could play for their national youth teams. He played 11 times for the Netherlands Under-17 team. He was part of the team that reached the final of the 2009 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. They lost to Germany in the final. Rashid also played two games for the Dutch Under-19 team.
Iraq National Team
Later, Rashid decided to play for his birth country, Iraq. He joined the Iraq national team when the famous Brazilian footballer Zico was the coach. Osama played his first game for Iraq in a match against Brazil. He was also called up for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup in Australia, where Iraq finished in fourth place.
For the next four years, Osama did not play for Iraq very often. The team had many different coaches. However, Iraq's manager Srečko Katanec brought Rashid back for the 2019 Asian Cup. He played for 45 minutes in Iraq's first game. Iraq was knocked out of the tournament by Qatar in the round of 16. He also played in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
