Osama Rashid's Football Journey
Starting in Youth Football
Osama Rashid was born in Kirkuk, Iraq. In 1999, he joined the youth team of Feyenoord, a famous football club in the Netherlands. He had moved there from a smaller club called ZOB. Osama spent over ten years training with Feyenoord's youth teams. He was part of a very talented group of young players. Some of his teammates included Stefan de Vrij and Jordy Clasie.
Osama had an injury during the 2009 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. This injury made it hard for him to train with the main team. He believes this affected his chances of playing for Feyenoord's senior team. When he turned 18, Feyenoord did not offer him a professional contract. So, he left the club to find new opportunities.
Playing for Den Bosch
After leaving Feyenoord, Osama signed with FC Den Bosch. He played for them during the 2011–12 season in the Eerste Divisie. This is the second-highest professional football league in the Netherlands. He played 12 games and scored two goals. Den Bosch finished sixth in the league that season. Osama left Den Bosch when the season ended.
A Chance with Werder Bremen
In 2012, Wolfgang Sidka, a former player and coach for Iraq, helped Osama get a trial with SV Werder Bremen. This is a club in the top German league, the Bundesliga. Osama was invited for a second trial and was offered a contract. However, he decided not to sign it because he wanted to finish his studies. Osama later said that Feyenoord and Werder Bremen also had trouble agreeing on terms.
Moving to Excelsior Maassluis and Alphense Boys
Osama wanted to play more games. So, he joined Excelsior Maassluis for the 2012–13 season. This team played in the third tier of Dutch football. He played 20 games and scored five goals for them.
In 2013, Osama moved to Alphense Boys, a club in the fifth tier of Dutch football. He played 34 matches there and scored 15 goals. After the 2014–15 season, he left the club to play in Portugal.
Adventures in Portugal and Bulgaria
Joining Farense
Osama signed with S.C. Farense in Portugal in 2015. They played in the LigaPro, which is the second-highest league in Portugal. He played his first game on August 8, 2015. He scored his first goal against Covilhã. Osama was a regular player for Farense, playing 41 league games and scoring 6 goals. He then received an offer to play in Bulgaria, which was a chance to play in a top league for the first time.
Time with Lokomotiv Plovdiv
Osama finally got to play in a top league when he joined PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv in Bulgaria. He made his first appearance as a substitute in a game against Slavia Sofia. However, Osama quickly left Bulgaria because he found it hard to settle there. He returned to Portugal and joined C.D. Santa Clara.
Success at Santa Clara
Santa Clara, another LigaPro team, announced Osama's signing on January 24, 2017. He played his first game for them on February 12. He scored his first goal a few days later in a 2–0 win. The team finished 10th that season.
The next season, Osama started strong. He scored in his first league and cup matches. He then scored three more goals in the next three league games. This meant he scored in each of the first four league games! He also helped his team score goals. Osama got injured in January, but he recovered and returned to play. He scored in two more games, helping Santa Clara get promoted to the Primeira Liga. This is the top football league in Portugal.
In his first season in the Primeira Liga, Osama scored three goals and helped with three others in his first six games. He played in the first 14 games as a midfielder. He missed four games because he was playing for the Iraq national team in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. In February 2019, Osama injured his knee during a game. He missed five games because of this injury. He finished the season with 25 games, 7 goals, and 6 assists. Santa Clara finished in 10th place.
Moving to Gaziantep and Khor Fakkan
On January 23, 2021, Osama signed with Gaziantep, a club in Turkey. Santa Clara said they let him leave because he received a good offer. They also said that Osama became a "leading figure" and a "living legend" for their club. Osama played for Gaziantep for half a season. The club's performance dropped during his time there.
On June 8, 2021, Osama signed with Khor Fakkan in the United Arab Emirates.
Playing for His Country
Netherlands Youth Teams
Since Osama moved to the Netherlands when he was young, he was able to play for their national youth teams. He played 11 times for the Netherlands U17 team. He was part of the team that reached the final of the 2009 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. They lost to Germany in that final. Osama also played two games for the Netherlands U19 team.
Iraq National Team
Later, Osama decided to play for his birth country, Iraq. He made his debut for the Iraq national team in 2011. His first game was a 6–0 loss to Brazil. He was chosen to play in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup in Australia, where Iraq finished in 4th place.
For a few years, Osama did not play much for Iraq. But in 2018, Iraq's manager, Srečko Katanec, brought him back to the team for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. He played for 45 minutes in Iraq's first game, which they won 3–2. Iraq was knocked out of the tournament by Qatar.
Osama has continued to play for Iraq, scoring goals in important matches. He scored in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying game in November 2023. He also scored in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup in January 2024.
