The Town's Beginning
Osborn got its name from E.F. Osborn. He was a superintendent for the railroad. The town didn't have a name before this. A nearby town called Fairfield didn't want the railroad to pass through it. So, Osborn allowed the railroad to be built there instead.
Moving the Entire Town
In 1921, almost the entire town of Osborn had to move. The railroad moved too. They relocated about two miles away. This new spot was next to Fairfield, Ohio. This big move was needed because of the Miami Valley Flood Control Project. This project started after the Great Dayton Flood in March 1913. The flood caused a lot of damage in Dayton, Ohio. The project aimed to prevent such floods from happening again.
Osborn's Legacy in Fairborn
Many of the old houses from Osborn are still standing today. You can find them in Fairborn, Ohio. This area is known as the "Osborn Historic District." On January 1, 1950, Osborn and its neighbor, Fairfield, joined together. They formed a new city called Fairborn. The first business to show the new city's name was the large sign at the Fairborn Theatre.
Osborn's Old Cemetery
The old Osborn cemetery is now inside the boundaries of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. It's near the north end of the main flight line. This area used to be part of the town. In the 1940s, a longer runway was built. This was to fit large B-36 Bombers. Even then, the old streets of Osborn could still be seen on the ground near the airstrip.
