Oscar Valero Cruz (born November 17, 1934 – died August 26, 2020) was an important leader in the Catholic Church in the Philippines. He was a Filipino Archbishop, which is a high-ranking bishop. From 1991 to 2009, he served as the Archbishop of Lingayen–Dagupan in Pangasinan, Philippines.
Life and Church Service
Oscar Cruz was born on November 17, 1934, in Balanga, Bataan, Philippines. He studied to become a priest at the University of Santo Tomas Central Seminary. He also continued his studies in theology at the Lateran University.
Early Career
He became a priest on February 8, 1962. Later, on May 3, 1976, he was consecrated as a bishop. He was the first Filipino to be the rector of San Carlos Seminary. This seminary is part of the Archdiocese of Manila. He held this position from 1973 to 1978.
Becoming an Archbishop
From 1976 to 1978, he served as an auxiliary bishop in Manila. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop of an area. After that, he became the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of San Fernando from 1978 to 1988.
He also worked as a judicial vicar for the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). This means he helped with legal matters for the Catholic Church in the Philippines. He was appointed Archbishop of Lingayen-Dagupan on July 15, 1991.
Retirement
On September 8, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI accepted Archbishop Cruz's retirement. He was then replaced by Bishop Socrates B. Villegas from the Diocese of Balanga.
Death
Archbishop Cruz passed away on August 26, 2020, at the age of 85. He died from complications related to organ failure. This was caused by COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines.
