The Oscar Easley Block, also known as Historic City Hall, is a very important building in San Clemente, California. It was one of the first buildings constructed when the city was new. It was originally designed to hold offices and a bank. This historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it's officially recognized as a special place worth preserving.
Building Its History
The Oscar Easley Block was built in 1929. It was named after Oscar Easley, who helped prepare the land for the new city of San Clemente. He also helped build the foundation for Ole Hansen's famous beachfront home, Casa Romantica. Ole Hansen was a key person in creating San Clemente.
Designing and Building
In March 1929, plans were made to build a two-story office building. The first floor was meant for a Bank of America branch. The second floor was planned for the Chamber of Commerce and Ole Hansen's main office.
The building was designed by Virgil Westbrook. He also designed the San Clemente Beach Club. Leroy M. Strang was the builder. Both Virgil Westbrook and Leroy Strang were important people in San Clemente's early days. In 1928, they were both elected to the very first City Council of San Clemente. Leroy Strang even served as the city's first Mayor!
Who Owned the Building?
In 1936, the Bank of America took ownership of the building because of financial issues. Later, a new owner bought the building and opened a music store called the "House Of Music" there.
