Oscar Roberto Panno (born March 17, 1935) is a famous Argentine chess player. He holds the highest title in chess, known as Grandmaster. Panno is known for his strong play and for representing his country in many important tournaments around the world.

Early Chess Success
Oscar Panno was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He showed great talent in chess from a young age. In 1953, when he was just 18, he won the 2nd World Junior Chess Championship. This was a big achievement, as he beat many future strong players like Bent Larsen. In the same year, he also won the championship of Argentina. By the age of 20, Oscar Panno had earned the title of Grandmaster.
Playing Against the Best
Panno competed in five "interzonal tournaments." These events are important steps for players hoping to challenge for the World Chess Championship. His best result was in Gothenburg in 1955. He finished third, just missing second place by a small margin. He even beat Boris Spassky, who later became a World Champion.
This great performance allowed Panno to play in the 1956 Candidates tournament in Amsterdam. The winner of this tournament would get to play for the World Championship title. While he didn't win the Candidates tournament, reaching this stage was a major highlight of his career.

Experts who study chess history believe Oscar Panno was one of the top players in the world during his prime. In late 1955, he was estimated to be as high as 18th globally. Oscar Panno had many successes in various chess tournaments. He won the international tournaments at Mar del Plata in 1954 and 1969. He also won the open tournaments there in 1986, 1988, and 1994.
He won the strong Palma de Mallorca international invitational tournament twice in a row. He shared first place in 1971 and won outright in 1972. In 1977, Panno tied for first place at the famous Lone Pine tournament.
Representing Argentina
Panno proudly played for Argentina in eleven Chess Olympiads. The Chess Olympiad is a team competition where countries send their best players to compete. His teams won silver medals in 1954 and bronze medals in 1958 and 1962. This shows his important role in Argentina's chess success.
Oscar Panno was still active in chess as of 2008. He finished third in the Bobby Fischer Memorial tournament held in Villa Martelli.
