Oscar Armando Yanes González (born April 25, 1927 – died October 21, 2013) was a famous Venezuelan journalist and bestselling author. Many people see Oscar Yanes as a pioneer in Venezuela's TV news reporting. This means he helped start and shape how news was shown on television.

He won the National Prize for Journalism three times. In 1992, he also won the Silver Book Prize because his book was the most popular that year.

About Oscar Yanes

Oscar Yanes was born in Caracas, Venezuela, on April 25, 1927. As a child, he went to Zamora School. Later, he decided to study journalism after seeing an advertisement for a newspaper.

He joined the first journalism school in Venezuela, called "Augusteo," which started in October 1941. At that time, there was more freedom for newspapers. This allowed three important newspapers to start: Últimas Noticias, El Nacional, and El Morrocoy Blue. Oscar Yanes was part of the first team at Últimas Noticias and worked there for several years.

When he was 25, he became the director of the newspaper La Esfera. Ramón David León, who first introduced him to journalism, gave him this important job.

Reporting and Teaching

In 1966, Oscar Yanes was sent to Vietnam as a war correspondent for Venevisión, a Venezuelan TV network. For two months, he created six special reports about the war. These reports were shown across Latin America. Some of his reports included "The War on the Sea," "The War in the Air," and "The War in the Jungle."

He was also a respected professor. He taught the first class at the School of Social Communication at the Central University of Venezuela. He also taught at the Andrés Bello Catholic University of Caracas.

Awards and TV Shows

Oscar Yanes won the National Prize for Journalism three times. He also received the Monseñor Pellín Prize. He won the First Prize from the Association of Writers of Venezuela for his book "Carlos J. Bello, the Forgotten Sage." In 1992, he won the Silver Book Award for having the year's most circulated book.

He became very famous for his television programs. He was known for his unique way of interviewing people live on TV. Oscar Yanes was especially popular for telling stories about history on his TV show called Así son las Cosas (The Way Things Are).

Oscar Yanes also served as a Deputy in the Venezuelan congress for about 15 years. He was highly respected during his time as a public servant. He was a strong believer in justice and truth. He was also a passionate historian who loved Venezuela, the country where he grew up.

Oscar Yanes passed away on October 21, 2013, in Caracas, Venezuela, at the age of 86. He died from pneumonia.
