Osgood was officially planned and mapped out in 1854. This happened when the railroad lines were extended to reach that area. The town was named after A. L. Osgood, who was an important official for the railroad.
A post office began operating in Osgood in 1855. In the 1890s, Osgood was known as a "sundown town." This meant that, at the time, African Americans were not allowed to live there. This was a very unfair rule that is no longer in place. During this period, Osgood had stronger trade connections with Cincinnati than with Indianapolis.
