Osgood, Idaho facts for kids
Osgood is a small community in Bonneville County, Idaho, United States. It's not an official city, but it's close to Idaho Falls. Osgood is part of the larger area around Idaho Falls.
History of Osgood
In the 1800s, the area where Osgood is now was called Eagle Rock. It was an important place because people could cross the Snake River there using a ferry. The name "Eagle Rock" came from a rocky island in the river where about 20 eagles used to build their nests.
Over time, the name Eagle Rock moved downstream to the town we now call Idaho Falls. So, the ferry crossing spot became known as Payne.
Soon after, the Osgood Canal was built nearby. This canal helped farmers use water from the Snake River to grow more crops. Because of the canal, the community started to be called Osgood, and it still has that name today.
Getting Around and Things to See
In 1972, a Boy Scout from Idaho Falls built a small monument on the west side of the Snake River. You can see Eagle Rock from this spot. Today, people who like to fish, hunt, or take pictures often visit this area. Sadly, no eagles nest on the rock anymore.
It's easy to get to Osgood! You can take exit 128 from Interstate 15. The community is also just north of Fanning Field, which is the airport for Idaho Falls.
