Osgood, North Dakota facts for kids
Osgood was once a small city in Cass County, North Dakota, in the United States. It was located on the east side of the Sheyenne River, just three miles south of West Fargo. Today, Osgood is no longer a city. Instead, the area is now a neighborhood within Fargo, North Dakota, known for its golf course. Both the golf course and the neighborhood still use the name "Osgood."
How Osgood Began
Osgood was founded in 1884. When it first started, it was called "Garfield." This name was chosen to honor James A. Garfield, who had recently been the President of the United States and was sadly assassinated.
Why the Name Changed
Later, the town's name was changed from "Garfield" to "Osgood." This new name honored the person who owned the land where the town was built. This landowner gave the site to a man named C.C. Furnberg. Mr. Furnberg then opened a country store and a post office in the new town.
The Store and Post Office
The country store and post office were important places for the people living in Osgood. They served the community for many years. However, in 1953, both the post office and the store closed down.
Osgood's Legacy Today
After the store closed, C.C. Furnberg's son, Oscar, decided to donate the old store building to the Cass County Historical Society. This group helped restore the store, making it look like it did in the past. You can now see the restored store on display at the Bonanzaville, USA pioneer village museum, which is a place where you can learn about early life in the area.
Even though Osgood is no longer a city, its history lives on. The neighborhood in Fargo that covers the old Osgood area still uses the name. Many of the streets in this neighborhood, like Fernberg Place and Houkum Court, are named after the families who originally lived in the old town. If you visit the Osgood Golf Course clubhouse or the Osgood Hornbacher's supermarket, you might even find old pictures of what the town used to look like!
