Oshinow Lake, also known as Deep Lake, is a beautiful lake. You can find it north of Great Central Lake on Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada.

The Story Behind Oshinow Lake's Name

Oshinow Lake has an interesting history, especially when it comes to its name. Maps showed this lake as early as 1923.

What Does "Oshinow" Mean?

People once thought the local Indigenous name, "oshinoweth," meant "all kinds of game." This would suggest the area was rich with animals.

However, in 1988, the Alberni District Historical Society looked into it. They confirmed that the local name for the lake was "Oshinow." This name actually means "deep."

Old Records of the Lake

Even older records from 1930 also mention the lake. These records, found in a book called a Gazetteer, also called it "Oshinaw." This shows the name has been around for a long time.
