Oteruelo del Valle

History of Oteruelo del Valle

Early Beginnings

Oteruelo del Valle and Rascafría began as settlements in the Middle Ages. This happened when people started moving back into the nearby mountains. This land was once part of the Kingdom of Toledo. However, it was mostly empty. This allowed local councils to gain control of the land. In return, they had to provide military services. Because of this, new people moved into these areas.

From the 1500s to the 1700s

In the 1500s, Rascafría and Oteruelo were separate places. They belonged to the Community of Segovia. At that time, Oteruelo had 49 families and 64 houses. The main jobs were raising sheep and farming. Some buildings from this time still exist today. The church of Nuestra Señora de la Paz was damaged during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. It was rebuilt in 1944 by an architect named Rodolfo García-Pablos.

The 1800s and 1900s

After Spain reorganized its provinces in 1833, Oteruelo became part of the province of Madrid. The main ways people earned money were from raising cattle and farming. There was not much industry. In 1975, Oteruelo joined Rascafría and became part of that larger town. Before this change, 208 people lived in Oteruelo. Schools were built in the northern part of the village during this period.

Oteruelo Today

Today, the old school building is home to the Sala Permanente Luis Feito. This is a special room that shows many artworks by the artist Luis Feito.

Oteruelo del Valle is located close to other towns. It is 1.4 kilometers from Alameda del Valle. It is also 2.3 kilometers from Rascafría and Pinilla del Valle.

The town is surrounded by mountains. These include the Montes Carpetanos, Sierra de la Morcuera (to the east), and Cuerda Larga (to the south). These mountains give Oteruelo del Valle a special climate. The Sierra de Guadarrama mountains act like a "barrier." They are very tall, reaching up to 2000 meters. This barrier causes Oteruelo del Valle to have different weather than other parts of the Castilian meseta (a large plateau in Spain). It gets a lot of rain, and the temperatures are not as warm. Because of this, you can find plants and animals here that are different from those in other parts of northwest Madrid.
