Buitrago del Lozoya is a cool town in the middle of Spain. It is located in the Madrid region. The town is part of an area called Sierra Norte.

What makes Buitrago special are its old walls. They were built by the Moors around the 11th century (about 1000 years ago). These walls were fixed up in the 15th century. The town is almost completely surrounded by the Lozoya River, like a little island!

You can also visit the old Buitrago del Lozoya Castle. It was built in the 15th century. The Church of Santa María del Castillo is another old building from 1321. There is also a small Picasso Museum. This museum has art by the famous artist Pablo Picasso. The art was collected by Eugenio Arias, who was Picasso's friend and a barber from Buitrago.

Belén Viviente: A Living Nativity Scene

In 1988, some people in Buitrago decided to create a "Belén Viviente." This is like a living Christmas nativity scene. They got the idea from other towns. The first time they did it, about 80 actors took part. Around 4,000 people came to watch the scenes.

It was such a big success that in 1991, a special group was formed. It was called the "Buitrago del Lozoya Living Belén Cultural Association." More than 100 actors joined in! The event started to attract over 10,000 visitors.

Today, the Belén Viviente in Buitrago del Lozoya is one of the most important events in Spain. It has 39 different scenes spread out over a 1,300-meter path. More than 200 actors, 15 technicians, and 35 security officers help make it happen. This amazing cultural event brings over 25,000 visitors to Buitrago del Lozoya every year.

Medieval Fair: Step Back in Time

Since 2001, Buitrago del Lozoya has hosted a Medieval Fair. It takes place every year on the first weekend of September. This fair has become very popular. Over 30,000 visitors come each year! It is now one of the most important events in the Community of Madrid.

For three days, Buitrago goes back in time to the Middle Ages. The fair has a huge market with over 100 stalls. You can also enjoy many activities like theater shows, music, dancing, and a parade. It's a great way to experience history!
