Othmar Mága (born June 30, 1929 – died January 28, 2020) was a famous German conductor. He led many orchestras around the world. These included the Odense Symphony Orchestra in Denmark and the KBS Symphony Orchestra in Korea. He was known for recording many concertos. These were often for instruments like the horn and double bass.

Othmar Mága was born in 1929 in Brno. At that time, Brno was part of Czechoslovakia. His parents were from Germany and Hungary. He loved music from a young age.

He studied violin, conducting, and composing. He went to the University of Stuttgart from 1948 to 1952. Later, he studied music history and German literature. He did this at the University of Tübingen from 1952 to 1958. He also learned more about conducting. He had lessons from famous teachers like Paul van Kempen and Sergiu Celibidache.

His Career as a Conductor

Mága became a chief conductor for several orchestras. From 1963 to 1967, he led the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra. Then, from 1968 to 1970, he was with the Nürnberger Symphoniker.

After that, he became the General Music Director (GMD) of the Bochumer Symphoniker. A GMD is the main leader of an orchestra. He also became a professor at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen. He taught there until 1982.

Othmar Mága also worked internationally. From 1983 to 1987, he was the chief conductor of the Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan, Italy. After that, he led the Odense Symphony Orchestra in Denmark. From 1992 to 1996, he was the chief conductor of the KBS Symphony Orchestra. This orchestra belongs to the Korean Broadcasting System.

Later in his career, from 2002 to 2003, he was GMD of the Niederrheinische Sinfoniker. This was at the Theater Krefeld und Mönchengladbach. Othmar Mága passed away in Kiel, Germany, on January 28, 2020.

Othmar Mága conducted music for sixty years. His collection of music included over 2000 different pieces. He conducted music from the Renaissance period. This was a time of great art and music. He also conducted works by modern composers. His repertoire included many operas too. Operas are plays where the words are sung.
