Oton Iveković (born April 17, 1869 – died July 4, 1939) was a famous Croatian painter. He studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Later, he became a teacher at the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts. Iveković loved to paint scenes from history and some religious stories. Many of his paintings are still important pictures of Croatian history.

Early Life and Art School

Oton Iveković was born on April 17, 1869, in a town called Klanjec. He finished elementary school there. He went to high school in Zagreb for three and a half years. Oton really liked history and art classes. He didn't pay much attention to other subjects.

His brother, Ćiril, went to art school in Vienna. Oton wanted to join him and study art too. But his family didn't have enough money for him to go. So, Oton started learning art in Zagreb. He studied with Ferdo Quiquerez, a Croatian painter. Oton didn't give up on his dream. He worked hard in the autumn and winter. He saved enough money to go to Vienna in the spring.

Studying in Vienna

When Oton arrived in Vienna, he joined a summer art class. In the middle of 1888, he became a regular student. He studied with Christian Griepenkerl until 1890. After that, Oton decided to focus on history painting. This is a type of painting that shows important historical events. He studied with Josef Matyáš Trenkwald.

Later, Oton had some disagreements with his teachers. He was asked to leave for a summer semester. But he returned in 1886 to continue his history painting studies. This time, he worked with August Eisenmenger. Oton then received a scholarship. This was money to help him pay for his studies. It came from the Academy and the government in Zagreb.

In 1892, Izidor Kršnjavi helped Oton. He supported Oton's studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. Kršnjavi really liked Oton's history paintings. He suggested Oton study with Ferdinand Keller. This happened at the Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe in 1892.
