Ottmar Schreiner (born February 21, 1946 – died April 6, 2013) was a German lawyer and politician. He was a well-known member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD). He was known for his strong left-wing views within his party.

Ottmar Schreiner's Early Life and Education
Ottmar Schreiner studied law at several universities. These included the University of Saarbrücken and the Free University of Berlin. Before his university studies, he was a soldier for a time. He served as a paratrooper officer. Even after his main military service, he continued as a reserve officer. He trained with the German Airborne troops until he was in his fifties.
Joining the Social Democratic Party
In 1969, Ottmar Schreiner became a member of the SPD. This is one of Germany's main political parties. He helped start the Young Socialist Student Groups. He also led the General Students' Committee (AStA) at Saarbrücken University. From there, he was chosen for a national student leadership role.
Later, he was elected to the national leadership of the Jusos. This is the youth organization of the SPD. He ran for the top Juso leadership position in 1977 and 1978. He did not win these elections.
Serving in the German Parliament
From 1980 until he passed away in April 2013, Schreiner was a member of the Bundestag. The Bundestag is the German parliament. He was directly elected from the electoral district of Saarlouis. He kept this seat in the 2005 federal elections.
From 1991 to 1997, he was a spokesperson for the SPD's group in parliament. He worked on the Committee on Work and Social Order. From 1997 to 1998, he was a deputy chairman for his party's group in the Bundestag. From 1998 to 1999, he was the executive director of the SPD.
He also led a study group within the SPD. This group focused on workers' issues. It was known for its left-wing ideas. It had strong connections to trade unions. Schreiner himself was a member of the metalworkers' union, IG Metall.
His Passing
Ottmar Schreiner passed away in April 2013. He had been battling cancer for a long time.
