Otto's Early Life and Family
Otto I was the youngest son of Bretislav I, who was the Duke of Bohemia. His mother was Judith of Schweinfurt. The Přemyslid family was very important in shaping the history of Bohemia.
Otto's Brothers and Their Roles
After his father, Bretislav I, passed away in 1055, Otto's older brother, Spytihněv II, became the new Duke of Bohemia. Otto himself started his rule as a Přemyslid prince in the city of Brno.
However, Otto had some disagreements with another brother, Vratislaus of Olomouc. Because of these conflicts, Otto had to seek safety in Prague.
Becoming Prince of Olomouc
Things changed in 1061 when Duke Spytihněv died. His brother Vratislaus then became the new Duke of Bohemia. At this point, Otto took over the leadership of the Olomouc principality.
Like his brothers Conrad and Bishop Jaromír of Prague, Otto did not always agree with Duke Vratislaus. They often resisted Vratislaus's efforts to have stronger control over all the lands.
Otto's Marriage and Children
Before the year 1073, Otto married a woman named Euphemia. She was the daughter of King Béla I of Hungary.
Otto and Euphemia had two sons:
- Svatopluk, Duke of Bohemia (who died in 1109)
- Otto II the Black (who died in 1126)
