Otto (German: Otto Wilhelm Luitpold Adalbert Waldemar; born 27 April 1848 – died 11 October 1916) was the King of Bavaria from 1886 until his death. He never actively ruled his kingdom. This was because he had a serious mental health condition. His uncle, Prince Luitpold, and later his cousin, Prince Ludwig, ruled Bavaria for him as regents.

King Otto of Bavaria: A Life of Royalty

Otto was born on April 27, 1848, in Munich, Bavaria. His full name was Otto Wilhelm Luitpold Adalbert Waldemar. He was a member of the Wittelsbach royal family.

Early Life and Family

Otto was the second son of King Maximilian II of Bavaria. His mother was Marie of Prussia, who was a princess from Prussia. Otto also had an older brother named Ludwig II. Ludwig II later became king before Otto.

A King Who Couldn't Rule

Otto became King of Bavaria on June 13, 1886. This happened after his brother, King Ludwig II, passed away. However, King Otto was not able to perform his royal duties. He had a severe mental health condition that made it impossible for him to govern.

Because of his illness, Otto could not make decisions for the kingdom. This meant that someone else had to rule in his place.

What is a Regent?

A regent is a person who rules a kingdom when the king or queen cannot. This might happen if the ruler is too young, too ill, or away from the country. For King Otto, his uncle, Prince Luitpold, became the first regent. Prince Luitpold ruled Bavaria for many years, from 1886 until 1912.

After Prince Luitpold died, his son, Prince Ludwig, became the new regent. Prince Ludwig ruled for Otto from 1912 until 1913.

Otto's Later Years and Passing

King Otto lived a quiet life away from public view. He spent his later years at Fürstenried Palace. Even though he was king, he did not participate in government.

On October 11, 1916, King Otto passed away at the age of 68. He died from a medical condition. His cousin, Prince Ludwig, who had been his regent, then became the new King of Bavaria, known as Ludwig III.

King Otto was buried at St. Michael's Church in Munich.
