Ottobrunn is a town in Germany, located southeast of Munich, in the state of Bavaria. It was officially founded in 1955. Ottobrunn is mostly a residential area with many semi-detached and detached houses, surrounded by green gardens. It is also home to the German headquarters of Airbus Defense and Space, a major aerospace company. This town is known for being one of the most densely populated places in Germany, right after Munich.
A Look Back: Ottobrunn's History
How Ottobrunn Grew
The main part of Ottobrunn was developed in the mid-1980s. The town hall was built in 1983, and the community center followed in 1986. This community center is named after Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari. He was a German-Italian composer who lived in Ottobrunn between 1915 and 1931.
The Ottosäule: A Royal Memory
There is a special memorial column in Ottobrunn called the Ottosäule. It was created by a stone carver named Anton Ripfel. This column remembers a very important day in 1832. On that day, Otto of Greece passed through this area on his way to become the king of Greece.
The column was first placed exactly 12 kilometers (about 7.5 miles) from the center of Munich. It marked the exact spot where Otto's father, Ludwig I of Bavaria, said goodbye to his son. Later, the column was moved about 9 meters (30 feet) southwest. This was done to make space for widening the Rosenheimer Landstrasse road.
