Otway's History
Otway has been around for a long time. A post office, where people send and receive mail, opened in Otway in 1861. The town itself was officially planned out on March 29, 1884.
The village got its name from Thomas Otway. He was a famous English writer who lived many years ago. Otway officially became a village in 1890. This means it got its own local government.
Trains and Travel in Otway
Years ago, trains were a very important way to travel. Trains going from Portsmouth to Cincinnati used to stop at the Norfolk & Western train station in Otway. This station was a busy spot for people and goods.
In 1956, the train station building was moved. It was turned into a convenience store. This happened because more and more people started using roads and cars instead of trains for travel.
Otway and the 2012 Tornado
On March 2, 2012, a tornado hit southern Ohio. This tornado had strong winds, blowing at over 75 miles per hour. Otway was affected by this storm.
The village's fire department building was damaged. Two houses in Otway also got hurt by the tornado. One of Otway's emergency vehicles was damaged too. But the community helped out! The Uniopolis Fire Department donated a new pumper tanker truck. This helped Otway replace their damaged vehicle quickly.
