Otwell's Past: A Brief History
Otwell wasn't always called Otwell! It was first named Pierceville in 1855. This name honored President Franklin Pierce.
Why the Name Change?
The name had to change in 1864. This was because another place in Indiana was already called Pierceville. To avoid confusion, the residents voted to change the name to Otwell. The new name came from Robert Otwell Brown, the son of an early settler in the area.

A post office has been serving the community of Otwell since 1864.

Otwell is located along Indiana State Road 257. It is also about one mile away from Indiana State Road 56. These roads help connect Otwell to other places in Indiana.

The main school district for the area is the Pike County School Corporation.
Otwell Miller Academy
Otwell has a special type of school called a charter school. It is named Otwell Miller Academy. This school opened in 2017. It started after the Pike County school corporation closed its elementary school, Otwell Elementary School. In the 2018-2019 school year, Otwell Miller Academy had 88 students. Grace College helps support this charter school.
Otwell High School
Before 1974, Otwell had its own high school. The school colors were blue and white. Their mascot was the Millers. In 1937, students from Velpen High School also joined Otwell High School. In 1974, Otwell High School merged with other schools to form Pike Central High School.
Public Library
Otwell also has a public library. It is a branch of the Pike County Public Library system.
