Our Lady and St Joseph's Church is a Roman Catholic church located in Carlisle, Cumbria, a city in England. It's a special kind of church called a parish church, meaning it serves a local community. This beautiful church was built a long time ago, between 1891 and 1893. You can find it right in the middle of Carlisle, at the corner of Warwick Road and Warwick Square. It's also recognized as a Grade II listed building, which means it's an important historical structure.

History of the Church

Early Beginnings in Carlisle

The story of Our Lady and St Joseph's Church began in 1798. At that time, a small Roman Catholic chapel was started in Carlisle. It was founded by the Fairburn Family on the West Walls. Soon after, in 1800, a Catholic mission began. This mission was supported by the people living in the area. The first priest who led this mission was Joseph Marshall.

Growing Community Needs

As the years passed, more and more Catholic people moved to Carlisle. By the 1820s, the small chapel was no longer big enough. So, plans were made to build a larger church. A new church was built on Chapel Street between 1824 and 1825. However, by the 1870s, even this church became too small for the growing number of people attending. This led to the idea of building an even bigger church in 1879.

Building the New Church

The first stone for the current church was laid on May 18, 1891. The church was officially opened in 1893. The land where the church stands, Warwick Square, was owned by the Duke of Devonshire. Building the church cost about £12,000 back then. The church was designed by a famous group of architects called Dunn, Hansom and Dunn. This team also designed another well-known church, Our Lady and the English Martyrs Church in Cambridge.

The Church Community Today

Our Lady and St Joseph's Church is an active place of worship. It is part of a larger group of churches in Carlisle. This group is called the city and district parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Priests from the Diocese of Lancaster serve the church.

The church holds two Masses every Sunday. These services are at 10:00 AM and 4:30 PM.
