The Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral (also known as Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Maracay) is an important Catholic building. It is located in the city of Maracay, which is in Aragua state, Venezuela. This cathedral is the main church for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Maracay. This means it is where the bishop of Maracay has his official seat.
Unlike many other cathedrals in Venezuelan cities, which are usually found facing a Plaza Bolivar, the Maracay Cathedral is different. It stands opposite Plaza Girardot. This plaza was created to honor a local hero.
History of the Cathedral
The building started as the "Church of Maracay." It was built on land that belonged to the Marquis de Mijares. This happened in the late 1600s. The first priest for this church was Francisco Pérez Estopiñán in 1701.
Over many years, the church has been changed and updated. Its current look is the result of these many changes throughout the city's history.
Catholic Rites
This cathedral follows the Roman or Latin rite. This is the most common type of worship in the Catholic Church. It is the main church for the Latin diocese of Maracay.
It is important not to confuse this cathedral with another Catholic cathedral in the same city. That other cathedral is also dedicated to "Our Lady of the Assumption." However, it is located in San Jacinto and is used by the Catholic Syriac rite. Both rites are part of the worldwide Catholic Church and are under the authority of the Pope in Rome. They just have different traditions and ways of celebrating Mass.
