The Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral is a large Catholic church in Maracay, Venezuela. It is also known as the Cathedral of Maracay. This important building serves as the main church for the Catholic Diocese of Maracay.
Unlike many other cathedrals in Venezuela, it is not located near a Plaza Bolivar. Instead, it stands opposite Plaza Girardot. This plaza was built to honor a local hero.
History of the Cathedral
The cathedral started as the "Church of Maracay." It was built on land owned by the Marquis de Mijares. This happened in the late 1600s. Its first leader, called a pastor, was Francisco Pérez Estopiñán in 1701.
Over the years, the church has changed a lot. Its current look is the result of many updates and changes. The church follows the Roman or Latin rite. This is the main way of worship for most Catholics. It is the central church for the Latin Diocese of Maracay.
Different Catholic Cathedrals
It's important not to confuse this cathedral with another Catholic church in Maracay. There is another cathedral dedicated to the same Marian devotion. However, that one is in San Jacinto. It is used by Catholics who follow the Syriac rite. Both churches are part of the larger Catholic Church. They are both under the authority of the Pope in Rome.
