From Humble Beginnings to a Cathedral
The story of this cathedral starts almost 100 years ago. It began as a small community and grew into the important landmark it is today.
A New Parish is Born
In 1927, a new church community, or parish, was started in San Bernardino. It was called Our Lady of the Rosary Parish. At first, they didn't have a church building. The community used a rented house for their church services. The priest also lived in the same house.
Construction on the church building we see today began in May 1928. It was designed in the Mission Revival style, which was inspired by old Spanish mission churches in California. The church was finished just a few months later in September 1928. A separate house for the priests, called a rectory, was built next to the church in 1936.
Serving the Community
The priests at Our Lady of the Rosary were very busy. Besides holding services at the church, they also served as chaplains for local hospitals. They also held Masses for the Native American community and for people visiting Lake Arrowhead during the summer.
In 1947, the parish opened a school. Nuns from the Dominican Sisters of Houston, Texas, came to teach the children. A home for the sisters, called a convent, was built in 1950. As the community grew, the church building was made larger in 1953 to fit more people.
Becoming a Cathedral
A very important event happened on July 14, 1978. The Pope, the leader of the Catholic Church, created the new Diocese of San Bernardino. Because of its history and size, Our Lady of the Rosary Church was chosen to be the cathedral for this new diocese. This was a great honor and gave the church the important role it has today.
