Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral is a special Roman Catholic church in San Bernardino, California. It's called a cathedral because it's the main church for the Diocese of San Bernardino. This means it's where the bishop of the area has his official chair.

Early Beginnings (1927-1928)

The Our Lady of the Rosary church community started in 1927. Bishop John Joseph Cantwell from Los Angeles helped create it. The first leader of the church was Father Patrick Curran.

At first, the church met in a rented house on Sierra Way. This house was both the church and where the priest lived. Building the church you see today began in May 1928. It was finished very quickly, by September of the same year. The church was built in the Mission Revival style, which looks like old Spanish missions. The house where the priests live now was built later, in 1936.

Serving the Community

Besides their regular church duties, the priests also helped many other places. They were chaplains (religious leaders) for hospitals like St. Bernardine, County, and the State hospital in Patton. They also held Masses (church services) for Native Americans at Del Rosa. In the summer, they even held services at Lake Arrowhead.

School and Growth

Our Lady of the Rosary School opened its doors on January 6, 1947. Nuns, called Dominican Sisters, from Houston, Texas taught at the school. A special building for the nuns, called a convent, was built in 1950. Later, the old school building was replaced with a new one across the street. The church building itself was made bigger in 1953 to hold more people.

Becoming a Cathedral (1978)

A very important event happened on July 14, 1978. Pope Paul VI, the leader of the Catholic Church, created the Diocese of San Bernardino. This new diocese needed a main church. Our Lady of the Rosary was chosen to be the cathedral for this new diocese.
