Lake Arrowhead is a beautiful community in the San Bernardino Mountains of California. It's surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest. The community sits around the large Lake Arrowhead Reservoir. Lake Arrowhead is about 13 miles (21 km) northeast of the city of San Bernardino.

In 2010, about 12,424 people lived here. The area was once called "Little Bear Lake." Around 1920, a group from Los Angeles bought the lake and the land. They changed its name to Arrowhead Lake.

Tourism is very important to Lake Arrowhead. It brings in millions of dollars each year. It also provides many jobs for local people. Over four million visitors come to the area every year. There are many places to stay, like hotels, motels, and cabins.

Economy and Tourism

Lake Arrowhead is a mountain resort in the San Bernardino Mountains. Its economy mostly depends on tourism. Both casual visitors and people who own vacation homes support the area. The main tourism businesses include real estate, places to stay, restaurants, and shops.

Lake Arrowhead doesn't have one official town center. However, the Lake Arrowhead Village is the main shopping area. It has many stores, restaurants, banks, and a supermarket. The village also hosts events all year. These include a free Summer Concert Series and a large Oktoberfest. Other events are car shows, dog shows, and an Antique Wooden Boat Show.

The University of California, Los Angeles has a conference center nearby. It offers lodging and meeting spaces. Other big employers are Mountains Community Hospital and the Rim of the World Unified School District.

Long ago, there was a lot of logging in the San Bernardino Mountains. The Brookings Lumber Company was one of the biggest. They operated from 1899 to 1912. They even built a special railroad to move logs.

Lake Arrowhead is in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. It's about 20 minutes north of San Bernardino. The main part of the community is where State Routes 173 and 189 meet. The area covers about 19 square miles (49.1 square kilometers). Most of this is land, and about 1.2 square miles (3.2 square kilometers) is water.

Lake Arrowhead is a private lake. Only property owners in Lake Arrowhead can use it.

Santa's Village was a popular theme park here. It was open from 1955 to 1998. It reopened in 2016. It was the first Santa's Village theme park in the United States.

Population Information

In 2010, Lake Arrowhead had a population of 12,424 people. Most residents (86.4%) were White. About 21.8% of the people were Hispanic or Latino.

The average age of people in Lake Arrowhead was 43 years old. About 24.5% of the population was under 18. About 14% of the population was 65 or older.

In 2010, the typical household income was $57,672. About 11.2% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Climate and Weather

Lake Arrowhead has a special climate for Southern California. It has four clear seasons. This allows for many outdoor activities all year. The climate is called a Warm-summer Mediterranean climate.

In summer, it's warm, and thunderstorms can happen. In winter, big storms from the Pacific Ocean bring a lot of snow. The area gets about 300 sunny days each year.

A big drought started in late 2011. By November 2016, the lake level dropped almost 12 feet (3.6 meters). This made much of the lake bottom visible. By February 2019, the lake level had mostly recovered.

Heavy Snow and Power Outages

Sometimes, heavy snow and strong winds cause power outages. In late December 2021, a storm left many homes without power for a week. A similar event happened in November 2019.

Lake Arrowhead in Movies and TV

Lake Arrowhead has been a filming location for many movies. Some of these include:

  • The Parent Trap (1961)
  • The Great Race (1965)
  • The Laundromat (2019)

The outdoor scenes for the movie Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927) were filmed here. This movie won three Academy Awards at the very first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929.

The Lake Arrowhead Conference Center was also featured in the TV series Dragnet. This was in Season 3, Episode 13 of the 1960s version.

Arts and Architecture

The Lake Arrowhead communities have many cultural events. The Arrowhead Arts Association helps with music performances. They also provide music education and scholarships for young people. The Mountain Skies Astronomical Society is also located here.

Since the 1920s, many Hollywood stars and wealthy people from Los Angeles built homes in Lake Arrowhead. These homes were designed by famous architects of the time. Some of these architects include:

In the early days, new homes had to be built in the French Norman or English Tudor Style. Rudolf Schindler, a modern architect, designed the first modern A-frame house in 1936. It was for Gisela Bennati. He created it as his own version of the French Norman style.

Lake Arrowhead is also home to what some call the world's largest A-frame building. This is the clubhouse of the Lake Arrowhead Country Club.
