Building History and Design
The Over United Reformed Church was designed by a famous architect named John Douglas. This was actually the second church he ever designed! Construction on the church started in 1865 and it was finished two years later, in 1867.
Unique Exterior Features
The outside of the church is quite special. It is made from polychromatic brick. This means the bricks are in different colours, creating interesting patterns. The roof is made of slate, and parts of the building are decorated with red sandstone. These sandstone pieces are called "dressings" and they add to the church's unique look.
Architectural Style and Opinions
The church is known for its unusual design. Edward Hubbard, who wrote a book about John Douglas, described the building as "experimental" and "an astonishing sight." This means it was quite different from other churches built at the time. Another expert, Nikolaus Pevsner, even called it "very ugly." However, its unique style makes it a notable example of John Douglas's early work.
