Overton, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Overton is a small place in the middle of the U.S. state of Missouri. It's called an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Overton is located in northeast Cooper County, right next to the big Missouri River.

You can find Overton near the southern edge of the Missouri River floodplain, which is a flat area of land next to the river. Missouri Route 98 goes right through the community, and a major highway, I-70, is about half a mile south. If you travel eight miles west, you'll reach Boonville, and four miles southeast is Wooldridge.

The Story of Overton

Overton was officially started in 1901. It was named after a man named William B. Overton, who owned the land where the community was built.

Before it was officially laid out, Overton had a post office. This post office opened way back in 1864, helping people send and receive mail. It stayed open for many years, finally closing its doors in 1944.
