Ovett is a small community in Jones County, Mississippi. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area the U.S. Census Bureau identifies for collecting statistics. It is not an officially incorporated town. Ovett is part of the larger Laurel area.
History of Ovett
Ovett started as a sawmill town in the early 1900s. A sawmill is a place where logs are cut into lumber. The community was located along the old Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad line. In its early days, Ovett was a busy place. It had six general stores, a blacksmith, and a pharmacy. There were also three lumber companies and two grocery stores.
Ovett was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 Census. At that time, its population was 183 people. A special retreat called Camp Sister Spirit is also located in Ovett.
Geography and Location
Ovett is found just west of the De Soto National Forest. It is also near Highway 15. The community has its own post office. The ZIP code for Ovett is 39464.
