Owamni is a unique restaurant located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is known for its special menu that focuses on "decolonized" food. This means all the dishes are made using ingredients that were traditionally eaten by Native American people before European settlers arrived.
You won't find common ingredients like butter, dairy, sugar, wheat, chicken, beef, or pork at Owamni. Instead, the chefs use things like wild game, different types of corn, and native plants. It's a way to celebrate and share indigenous food traditions.
About Owamni
Owamni opened its doors on July 19, 2021. You can find it in Mill Ruins Park, which is a cool spot near St. Anthony Falls. The restaurant's name, Owamni, comes from the Dakota language. It's their name for St. Anthony Falls, and it means "place of the falling, swirling water."
The restaurant is owned by two people, Dana Thompson and Sean Sherman. Sean Sherman is also the main chef, creating all the amazing dishes.

Owamni quickly became very popular and received a big honor. In 2022, it won the James Beard Foundation Award for Best New Restaurant.
