Owenmore River (County Cavan) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Owenmore River (its name Abhainn Mór means "Big River" in Irish!) is an important river in County Cavan, Ireland. It starts high up in the Cuilcagh Mountains and flows towards the north-west. This river is special because it joins the famous River Shannon, one of Ireland's longest rivers, in a place called Gowlat.

Where the Owenmore River Starts

The Owenmore River begins its journey in the Cuilcagh Mountains. This is in a townland called Dunmakeever, which is part of the Kinawley area in County Cavan. From there, the river flows for about 14.5 kilometers (9 miles) through a beautiful valley known as Glangevlin.

Joining the Shannon River

The Owenmore River eventually meets the mighty River Shannon. This happens about 3 kilometers (2 miles) downstream from where the Shannon itself starts, at a spot called Lugnashinna. Many people believe the Owenmore River is actually the "true" beginning of the River Shannon, even though the Shannon Pot is usually seen as its source. When the Owenmore joins, it adds about 11 kilometers (7 miles) to the Shannon's total length, making it even longer!

Fish in the River

The Owenmore River is home to a population of brown trout. These fish are a common sight in many Irish rivers and are popular with anglers.
