Owens Station, Delaware was once a small community in the state of Delaware, U.S.A. Today, what remains of this settlement is known simply as Owens. It is an unincorporated community, meaning it does not have its own local government like a city or town.

The Story of Owens, Delaware

Sussex County, Delaware, 1902

Owens Station was an important stop on the Queen Anne's Railroad line. This railroad is now closed down, or "defunct." It used to connect Ellendale and Greenwood.

What Happened to the Railroad?

When the Queen Anne's Railroad stopped running, its tracks were removed. All the land that the railroad owned was given back to its original owners. Because of this, many small communities that had grown up around the train stops, like Owens Station, slowly disappeared.

Owens Today

Even though most of the old town is gone, you can still find some houses from the original settlement. They are located where Beach Highway and Owens Road meet. The area is now simply called Owens. It sits on Delaware Route 16, just east of Greenwood.

The "Owens Station Hunting Preserve" gets its name from this historic rail community.

Population Over Time

At the start of the 20th century, Owens Station was a very small place. In 1900, only 18 people lived there. By 1925, the population had grown a bit to 62 people.
