Oxford Lake is a large and important lake located in Manitoba, Canada. It is part of the Hayes River system. This lake covers an area of about 401 km2 (155 sq mi). It sits high up, at an elevation of 186 m (610 ft) above sea level. The lake is a key part of the local environment and history.

Geography of Oxford Lake

Oxford Lake has a very interesting and unique shape. People often describe it as looking a bit like a person. It has a wider part to the east, which is like a 'head'. Then there is a narrow section, like a 'neck'. The main body of the lake then spreads out, forming a 'shoulder line'.

Lake Dimensions and Features

The 'head' part of the lake is roughly 7 miles (11 km) long and 5 miles (8 km) wide. The 'neck' section is about 1 mile (1.6 km) across. The 'shoulder line' stretches for about 11 miles (18 km). The southern side of the main body is about 25 miles (40 km) long. The northwest side is about 18 miles (29 km) long.

Inflows and Outflows

The Hayes River flows into Oxford Lake from the southwest. It also flows out of the lake from the southeast, near the town of Oxford House, Manitoba. Another river, the Carrot River, enters the lake on the northwest side. This river is important because it allows for a portage. A portage is a way to carry boats and goods over land to another body of water. In this case, it connects to Cross Lake, Manitoba on the Nelson River. Downstream from Oxford Lake, the Hayes River continues to Knee Lake.

Islands and Settlements

Oxford Lake is home to many islands. The largest one is called Carghill Island. This big island or peninsula fills a large part of the lake's main body. The community of Oxford House, Manitoba is located right on the lake. It is an important settlement for the local people.
