Ozanam House is an old, beautiful house in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It was built around 1886. This house is special because it's listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. This means it's an important historical building that needs to be protected.

The Story of Ozanam House

Early Days and Owners

Most of the land where Ozanam House stands was first bought from the government in 1879. A man named James Stirling owned it. Later, in 1884, William Berry bought the land. Then, in 1885, Richard Davies Graham became the owner.

The house was likely built around 1886. Richard Davies Graham borrowed money for the property in June 1886. He was an architect and surveyor. He probably designed Ozanam House himself. His office was in Brisbane, but he had an Ipswich office for a short time.

Changes Over Time

In 1892, Samuel Piper bought the property. Then, in 1906, John Canty, who was a blacksmith, became the owner. It's thought that some changes were made to the front porch around 1905. After John Canty passed away in 1946, his property went to Ethel May Senior.

The land was divided in 1950. Ethel May Senior kept the back part. The front part, with the house, was sold to Thomas Keith Johnson.

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul

In 1960, a charity group called the Society of St Vincent de Paul bought the house. They also bought the back part of the land in 1961. This group helps people in need. They named the house Ozanam House. It was named after their founder, Frederic Ozanam.

The Society has used the house for many things. They hold meetings and conferences there. They also store and prepare food for people. In the early 1960s, a timber shed was moved to the back. It's used for storing and sorting clothes and donations. Around 1982, a hostel for homeless men was built at the back. It was used until 1994. Now, it's a welfare office and a place where people can drop in for help.

Who Was Frederic Ozanam?

Frederic Ozanam was born in 1813 in Italy. His family later moved to France. From a young age, he wanted to help improve society. He also wanted to help people reconnect with their Catholic faith. In 1833, while at university, he and his friends started the Conference of Charity. This group visited and helped poor people. Two years later, it became the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. Frederic Ozanam was known for his strong faith and his kindness to everyone. He passed away in 1853.

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is a large international group of ordinary people. They are part of the Catholic Church. The Society is named after Vincent de Paul, who spent his life helping the poor.

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul started in Queensland because of tough times. In the early 1890s, there was a big economic downturn. Also, a terrible flood hit the Brisbane River in 1893. This caused a lot of hardship, especially for poor people. The first group in Queensland started in 1894 at Saint Brigid's Parish in Red Hill.

Ozanam House is a single-story timber building. It sits on timber stumps and has a roof made of corrugated iron. The roof has fancy metal decorations and timber brackets under the eaves. The house is on a block of land that slopes down towards Roderick Street. It faces north and has views over Ipswich.

The house is made of timber boards called chamferboard. It has porches, called verandahs, all around it. One corner at the back is enclosed. There's also a kitchen area at the back. The verandahs have single timber walls and curved corrugated iron roofs. They have decorative timber details and timber railings. There are timber panels between the stumps at the front.

French doors with arched glass panes open onto the verandahs. The main entrance has a timber door with patterned glass panels on the sides and above the door. The timber details on the verandah and the front stumps seem to have been added later than the main house.

Inside, the house has a hallway in the middle. There are two rooms on the east side used for storage. On the west side, there's one large room with a timber room divider. The ceilings are made of hardboard with timber strips. The walls are made of vertical timber boards. A glass door with lead patterns opens into the kitchen. There's a small laundry room at the back of the kitchen. A toilet is located on the back verandah.

Behind the house, there's a timber shed with a corrugated iron roof. It's used for storage. Two large trees are located to the west of the house. There's also a planted bank of earth along the Roderick and Waghorn Street sides. A path and concrete steps with a metal gate lead from the house down to Roderick Street.
