Peninsular War

Pablo Muñoz de la Morena y Martínez-Zarco (born July 7, 1769 – died September 9, 1848) was a brave Spanish cavalry officer. He is known as a hero of the Peninsular War, a big conflict against Napoleon's forces. He also fought with honor in other wars, like the Spanish-French War (1793-1795) and the Spanish-Portugal War (1801). King Fernando VII of Spain even honored him for his bravery in the Battle of Mengíbar in 1808.

Early Life and Family

Pablo Muñoz de la Morena was born in El Toboso, a famous village in Spain. This village is known from the book Don Quixote, as it was the home of Dulcinea. His family was noble and had lived there since the 1400s. They owned a lot of land, about 8,692 hectares.

Pablo's family had important ancestors. These included Bartolomé Martínez de la Morena, who was a crossbowman for Emperor Carlos I. Another was Dr. Esteban Martínez-Zarco y Muñoz de Horcajada, a rector at the Collegio di Spagna.

In 1801, Pablo married his cousin, Juana-María Cano Coronado. Later, in 1826, he married Basilisa Fernández Carrasco. Both marriages had special permission from the King. From 1820 to 1823, he served his hometown as a trustee for the City Council. He was also the local Commander of Arms, which meant he was in charge of military matters in El Toboso. He passed away in Alcañices in 1848. He was visiting his youngest son there and was buried in the local church cemetery.

Military Service and Battles

Pablo Muñoz de la Morena joined the Spanish Army in 1785. He was assigned to the provincial militias of Alcázar de San Juan. He fought in three major wars, just like another famous general, José de San Martín, who was born a few years after Pablo.

War of the Pyrenees (1793-1794)

Between 1793 and 1794, Pablo fought in the War of the Pyrenees against France. He took part in many battles, including Commanderie du Mas Deu, Trouillas, and Elne. He also helped capture castles like Banyuls-dels-Aspres. He was especially brave in a fight against French cavalry. Pablo also led a group that captured a key battery at Villelongue-dels-Monts. This helped the Spanish take the castle of Montesquieu-des-Albères. In 1794, he also fought in the battle of Paso de las Dos Hermanas.

War of the Oranges (1801)

In 1801, Pablo was active in the War of the Oranges against Portugal. He helped capture Juromenha and was part of the siege of Campo Maior.

Peninsular War (1808-1814)

During the Peninsular War, Pablo's first major action was helping to capture a French fleet in Trocadero. He then played an important role in many battles. These included the battles of Jaén, Mengíbar, and Bailén. He also fought in Somosierra, Valdepeñas, and Sagunto. He even managed to break the siege of Valencia twice.

Pablo Muñoz de la Morena retired from the army in 1812. His military awards and decorations are now kept in the town halls of Alcañices and El Toboso.
