Padasjoki is a small town, or municipality, in Finland. It is located in Southern Finland, in a region called Päijänne Tavastia. Padasjoki is about 53 kilometers (33 miles) from Lahti and 65 kilometers (40 miles) from Heinola.

As of 31 December 2023, Padasjoki has a population of 2,726 people. The total area of the municipality is 729.85 square kilometres (281.80 sq mi), and a big part of that, 206.68 km2 (79.80 sq mi), is water! The official language spoken here is Finnish.

Padasjoki is very popular for summer holidays. It has more holiday homes than people who live there all year round. This makes it a great place for vacations and enjoying nature.

A Look Back in Time

The first records of Padasjoki as an administrative area date back to 1442. Many of the villages in Padasjoki were already established during the Middle Ages. They are mentioned in old documents from the 15th century.

In 2020, Padasjoki was featured in a special video. The YL Male Voice Choir performed a tribute to the song Pohjois-Karjala. The video showed many beautiful rural scenes from Padasjoki. These included farms, swamps, and local shops. The video was seen over 100,000 times in just one day!

Winter Fun

  • In February, you can join a 7.5-kilometer (4.7-mile) skiing event. This happens on the frozen Lake Päijänne under the full moon.
  • In March, there's another skiing event on Lake Päijänne called Postihiihto.

Summer Events

  • During the first weekend of July, Padasjoki hosts Sahtimarkkinat. This is a market where you can try home-brewed beer.
  • Every two years, the Padasjoki Marina is the starting point for a sailing competition. It's called Päijännepurjehdus and takes place on Lake Päijänne.
