Paean (god) facts for kids
In Greek mythology, Paean (also spelled Paeëon or Paeon) was known as the special doctor for the Greek gods. He was the one they called when they needed healing.
Paean in Ancient Stories
Paean is mentioned in famous ancient Greek writings, like Homer's Iliad. In this epic poem, the powerful god of war, Ares, gets hurt by a human hero named Diomedes. Ares quickly goes to Mount Olympus, the home of the gods. There, Paean gives him medicine that makes him feel better right away.
Another time, Hades, the god of the underworld, was shot with an arrow by the mighty hero Heracles. Paean also helped Hades recover from his injury.
The ancient Greek writer Hesiod also wrote about Paean. He made it clear that Paean was a specific god, not just a general term for healers.
Paean's Name Changes
Over time, the name Paean (often spelled Paean) started to be used for other gods. First, it became another name for Apollo. This happened because Apollo was believed to have the power to bring diseases, but also to cure them. Later, the name Paean was also used for Asclepius, who was the main god of healing and medicine.
