A Grand Hotel's History

The land where the Palacio Duhau stands today once belonged to a man named Alejandro Hume. He was an important railway boss from England. In 1890, he built a large Tudor Revival style house there. This house was designed by architect Carlos Ryder. The land was on a main avenue and also had a bluff behind it. In 1913, a famous city planner named Charles Thays helped design beautiful gardens for the property.

From Home to Palace

In the 1920s, the Duhau family bought the property. They were wealthy landowners. They wanted a new, grand home next to the old Hume house. They asked architect León Dourge to design it. He was inspired by a famous French castle called the Château du Marais near Paris. The new palace, built in a Neoclassical style, was finished in 1932. It also had a guesthouse.

The Duhau family later moved into the older Hume house. The palace itself was empty for many years after the last Duhau sibling passed away in 1976.

Becoming a Luxury Hotel

In 2002, a local developer named Juan Scalesciani bought the property. He teamed up with the Hyatt Hotels Group. Hyatt wanted to open a new Park Hyatt hotel in Buenos Aires.

After a big investment of US$74 million, the Palacio Duhau - Park Hyatt Buenos Aires opened on July 12, 2006. The original palace building still has many of its first features. This includes its special red marble floors. It holds 11 rooms and 12 of the hotel's best suites. A new building was added on the other side of the gardens. It has 115 rooms and 27 suites. The hotel also has two restaurants, a bar, and tea rooms for guests to enjoy.
