Palatlakaha River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Palatlakaha River is a cool river located in Lake County, Florida. It's super important because it's the main starting point for the Ocklawaha River, which then flows into the even bigger St. Johns River. The Palatlakaha River actually begins at Lake Louisa. This lake gets its water from the Green Swamp, thanks to two smaller streams called Big Creek and Little Creek.

The River's Journey

From Lake Louisa, the Palatlakaha River flows north. It travels through a series of connected lakes often called the Clermont Chain of Lakes. Imagine a string of pearls, but with lakes!

  • First, it goes through Lake Susan.
  • Then, Lake Minnehaha.
  • Next is Lake Palatlakaha itself.
  • After that, Lake Hiawatha.
  • Then, Lake Minneola.
  • It continues to Cherry Lake.
  • Followed by Lake Lucy.
  • And finally, Lake Emma.

After leaving Lake Emma, the river winds its way through a swampy area before it reaches Lake Harris.

River Facts and Fun

The Palatlakaha River is about 44 miles (71 kilometers) long. That's a pretty good distance! The upper part of the river, which is about 26 miles (42 kilometers) long, is known as the Palatlakaha Run. This special section is a fantastic water trail for people who love to go canoeing or kayaking. Lake County helps organize this fun outdoor activity.

You might also notice some dams along the river. There are 6 water level control dams. These dams are like special gates that can be closed. They help keep the water levels higher, especially during times when there isn't much rain. This is important for boats and for the animals that live in and around the river.
