Palermo is a community located in Upper Township, within Cape May County, in the state of New Jersey. It is called a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's a specific area that the government counts for population, even though it doesn't have its own separate local government like a city or town.
Palermo is about 14 miles (23 km) northeast of Cape May Court House. The Palermo Air Force Station, which closed in 1970, was located just south of Palermo.

An early settler named Henry Young came to New Jersey before the year 1700. He arrived on a whaling ship and started a large farm, or "plantation," that stretched west from the Palermo area.
Around 1830, the Friendship School was built in Palermo. This school is one of the oldest in Upper Township. It was carefully restored in 1980, bringing it back to its original look.
Post Office and Railroad
Palermo got its own post office in 1872. This made it easier for people to send and receive mail.
Later, in 1897, the Ocean City Railroad built a train line through Palermo. They also put up a train station there. This train line later became part of the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines. Today, the old train line is no longer used.
Road Development Concerns
In 1953, there were plans to extend the Garden State Parkway through Palermo. Some farmers in Upper Township were worried about this new road. They were concerned it would cut through their land. A special group was created to help solve these disagreements between the farmers and the road builders.
