Palmetto, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Palmetto is a small, quiet place located in southeastern Greene County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's not a city or a town with its own local government, but rather what's known as an "unincorporated community." This means the area is governed by the county instead of its own city hall. Palmetto sits quite high up, about 1,437 feet above sea level, and is near the beginning of Turner Creek.

Where is Palmetto Located?

Palmetto is situated along the BNSF Railway, which is a major train line. It's about two miles northwest of a town called Rogersville. Another community, Henderson, is located about 1.5 miles to the east in Webster County, right along Missouri Route D. So, Palmetto is nestled between these other places, connected by roads and railways.

A Glimpse into Palmetto's History

Palmetto once had its own post office, which is where people would send and receive letters and packages. This post office opened in 1890. It served the community for several years before closing its doors in 1914.

It's a bit of a mystery why this community was named Palmetto. A palmetto is a type of palm tree, often found in warmer, southern states. Since Missouri isn't known for its palm trees, the reason behind the name remains unknown.
