Pamela Brown

Pamela Brown (born December 31, 1924 – died 1989) was a talented British writer, stage performer, and television producer. She wrote many books, especially for children.

Pamela Brown's Writing Journey

Pamela Brown began writing her first book, The Swish of the Curtain, when she was only 13 years old in 1938. A year later, World War II started. She left her school, Colchester County High School, and moved to Wales with her family.

Even though she moved, Pamela kept writing. She sent chapters of her book to friends in Colchester, Essex. She finally finished the book when she was 16.

About The Swish of the Curtain

The Swish of the Curtain is a story about seven children who love the theatre. They create their own acting group in a town called Fenchester. This town was Pamela's made-up name for her hometown, Colchester.

Pamela herself loved the theatre very much. From a young age, she put on plays with her friends. She later wrote several more books that continued the story of these characters. She also wrote other novels for children. Her work as an actress and television producer gave her many ideas for her stories. She learned a lot about early television and acting in a repertory company.

Pamela Brown's Stage Career

With the money she earned from The Swish of the Curtain, Pamela trained to be an actress. She studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. When she performed on stage, she used the name ‘Mela Brown’. She did this to avoid confusion with another actress who had the same name.

Pamela Brown's Television Work

For several years, Pamela Brown worked as a producer for children's shows. She created programmes for BBC television. One of her last appearances on TV was as a guest on the show Blue Peter. She was joined by the young actors who starred in the TV version of The Swish of the Curtain. One of these actors was Sarah Greene, who later became a Blue Peter presenter herself.
