Pamela Mary Brown (born July 8, 1917 – died September 19, 1975) was a talented British actress. She was known for her strong performances in many films and plays. One of her most famous roles was playing Princess Victoria, the mother of Queen Victoria, in the TV movie Victoria Regina (1961). For this role, she won a special award called the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

Pamela Brown was born in Hampstead, a part of London, England. Her father, George Edward Brown, was a journalist. Her mother was Helen Blanche. Pamela grew up as a Roman Catholic. She went to school at St Mary's School, Ascot.

Pamela Brown's Acting Career

Pamela Brown studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). This is a famous drama school in London. She started her stage career in 1936. Her first big role was Juliet in a play called Romeo and Juliet in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Early Film Roles

Pamela Brown also started acting in movies. She appeared in three films made by the famous directors Powell and Pressburger. Her very first movie part was in One of Our Aircraft Is Missing (1942). She also had a memorable role in I Know Where I'm Going! (1945). Later, she starred in the fantasy film-opera The Tales of Hoffmann (1951). In 1953, she played a character in Personal Affair.

Stage Success and Health Challenges

From the early 1950s, Pamela faced a health condition that made acting on stage difficult. Despite this, she had a big success in a play called The Lady's Not For Burning in London (1949). She acted alongside famous actors like Richard Burton and John Gielgud. This play later moved to Broadway in New York City. Critics praised her performance, saying she had a "gloriously uppity charm."

Pamela Brown continued to have a successful film career. She played Jane Shore in Laurence Olivier's Richard III (1955). She also appeared with Kirk Douglas in Lust for Life (1956), a movie about the artist Vincent van Gogh.

In the 1960s, she had roles in several big movies. These included Cleopatra (1963) and Becket (1964), where she played Eleanor of Aquitaine. She also appeared in the comedy A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966). Later, she played Lady Bessborough in Lady Caroline Lamb (1972).

Pamela Brown's Personal Life

In 1953, Pamela Brown divorced her husband, Peter Copley. They did not have any children. Later, she lived with Michael Powell, who was one of the directors who gave her early film roles. They stayed together until her death.

Pamela Brown passed away in 1975 at the age of 58. She died in Avening, Gloucestershire, England. She was buried in the Holy Cross churchyard in Avening.
