Pan pizza is a special kind of pizza that's baked in a deep dish pan. Imagine a pizza with a crust that gets super crispy and a bit fried on the bottom and sides because of the oil in the pan. It's really yummy!

Some famous types of pan pizza include Chicago and Detroit-style pizza. But when most people say "pan pizza," they often think of the thicker crust style that became popular thanks to Pizza Hut in the 1960s.

The Story of Pan Pizza

How Pizza Hut Started It

The idea for pan pizza really took off with Pizza Hut. Two brothers, Dan and Frank Carney, started a small pizza place in Wichita, Kansas. This little shop later grew into the huge company we know as Pizza Hut.

At first, the Carney brothers made thin crust pizzas. These usually had cheese, pepperoni, or sausage on them. But in 1959, when their pizza parlor became a franchise (meaning other people could open their own Pizza Hut shops), they added something new: a thicker crust pan pizza.

Other Companies Join In

Soon, other pizza companies saw how popular pan pizza was and started making their own versions. For example, in 1989, Domino's Pizza introduced its own deep dish or pan pizza.

Domino's found out that many pizza lovers (about 40%!) really liked thick crusts. So, they spent a lot of money, around $25 million, to launch their new pan pizza. A big part of that money, about $15 million, went into buying special new pans for baking the pizzas!
