Panacea is a small community in Wakulla County, Florida, United States. It's a place where people live, but it's not officially a city or town. In 2020, about 735 people lived there. Panacea is known for the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab, which is a nature center.

History of Panacea
Panacea was first known as Smith Springs. This was until 1893. At that time, some people from Boston bought land around five natural springs there. They changed the town's name to Panacea.
Why the Name Panacea?
The name "Panacea" comes from a Greek goddess. She was believed to have a universal remedy for all illnesses. The new owners thought the water from the springs had healing powers. This is why they chose the name Panacea for the community.
Panacea During the Civil War
During the Civil War, Panacea played an important role. A large factory in the area made salt. This salt was very important for much of western Florida.
Hurricane Impact
In 1928, a strong hurricane hit the area. It caused a lot of damage. Most of the buildings and developments in Panacea were destroyed by the storm.

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 735 people living in Panacea. There were 284 households and 199 families.
Getting Around Panacea
The Wakulla County Airport is located close to Panacea. It is about 3 miles south of the community. This airport is the only one in Wakulla County.
