Edmund Pang Ho-cheung (Chinese: 彭浩翔) is a talented film director, screenwriter, producer, and novelist from Hong Kong. He is known for making movies that often mix comedy with serious topics.

Pang Ho-cheung's Early Life and Dreams

Pang was born in Hong Kong in 1973. When he was just 15 years old, he started making short films. He used a video camera and worked with his older brother.

After high school, he studied in Taiwan for six months. Then he returned to Hong Kong. There, he worked as a writer for funny TV shows. He also wrote his first novel and columns for newspapers and magazines.

Pang's Journey to Filmmaking

In 1997, at age 24, Pang spent 18 months researching for his first novel, Fulltime Killer. This book became very popular. It sold over 100,000 copies in Hong Kong. Later, it was even turned into a radio show. A famous director, Johnnie To, made it into a movie in 2001.

Even while working in TV and radio, Pang always dreamed of directing movies. He made his first full-length movie, You Shoot, I Shoot, in 2001.

In 2019, there were plans for Pang to direct and produce a series of three films. These movies would be based on a famous Chinese novel called The Deer and the Cauldron. Each film was planned to have a big budget of $80 million.

Pang's Unique Film Style

Pang Ho-cheung is seen as one of the most unique directors in Hong Kong cinema. He doesn't like being called just a "Hong Kong director." He feels this doesn't show how many different kinds of movies are made there.

A film critic named Perry Lam once said that Pang is great at finding the funny side of everyday life. He sees the strange things in normal situations.

Pang's Personal Life

Pang is married to a producer named Subi Liang. In 2021, it was rumored that Pang and his wife moved to Canada. This was possibly because of difficulties with movie rules in mainland China.
