Acacia lasiocarpa, also known as Panjang or Pajang or glow wattle, is a type of shrub. It belongs to the Acacia plant family and is found only in Western Australia.
What it Looks Like
This shrub usually grows to be about as tall as a small bush, typically between 15 and 50 centimeters (6 to 20 inches) high. It can spread out about 1 meter (3 feet) wide. Its branches have small spines, which are like tiny thorns.
The leaves are a bright lime green color. They are made up of tiny leaflets, which are usually 1 to 10 millimeters long.
The Panjang plant blooms from May to October. During this time, it produces bright yellow flowers. These flowers grow in round, golden clusters, with 16 to 50 flowers in each ball.
After the flowers bloom, the plant grows flat, brown seed pods. These pods are usually 10 to 40 millimeters (0.4 to 1.6 inches) long and 3 to 5 millimeters (0.1 to 0.2 inches) wide. Inside these pods are small, sometimes spotted seeds, about 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters (0.06 to 0.1 inches) long.
How it Got its Name
The Acacia lasiocarpa was first officially named by a botanist named George Bentham in 1837.
For a short time, in 2003, it was called Racosperma lasiocarpum. But in 2006, it was moved back to the Acacia group, which is its original name.
There are three main types, or varieties, of this plant:
- Acacia lasiocarpa var. bracteolata
- Acacia lasiocarpa var. lasiocarpa
- Acacia lasiocarpa var. sedifolia
Where it Lives
This plant grows naturally in parts of Western Australia. You can find it in the Wheatbelt, Goldfields-Esperance, and Great Southern regions. Most of these plants are found southwest of a line connecting the towns of Kalbarri and Esperance.
The Panjang plant can be found in many different places. It grows in wet areas, around swamps, on flat lands, and even on sand dunes near the coast. It can also grow in many different types of soil.
